Pakistan, US sign NATO convoy deal

Pakistan on Tuesday signed a deal with the United States allowing NATO convoys to travel into Afghanistan until the end of 2015, seeking to draw a line under a seven-month border blockade.

Islamabad agreed to reopen land routes for NATO goods on July 3 after the longest suspension of the 10-year war in Afghanistan in protest at botched US air raids that killed 24 Pakistani troops, but few trucks have made it across since then.

The agreement is part of efforts by the allies to patch up their fractious relationship, which plunged into crisis last year over the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden, who was hiding in Pakistan, and the air strikes.

It comes just a day before the head of Pakistani intelligence, Lieutenant General Zaheer ul-Islam, begins a three-day visit to Washington for talks with the head of the CIA, which has been interpreted as another sign of a gradual rapprochement.

Putin signs Russia into WTO

President Vladimir Putin on Saturday signed the bill ratifying Russia’s entry to the World Trade Organization after 18 years of often acrimonious negotiations, the Kremlin press office said.

Economists have long argued that Russia needed to join the WTO as it was the only major economy outside the body - following China’s membership in 2001 - and the government hopes accession will stimulate growth.

The measure making Russia the 156th WTO member will become law within 30 days, after the lower house of parliament, the State Duma, approved it on July 10 and the upper house, the Federation Council, on Wednesday. But the membership has also been controversial, with some medium-sized firms expressing concern they will be put out of business by being unable to compete against imports made cheaper by a reduction in customs tariffs.

DV Sadananda Gowda resigns, Jagadish Shettar to be new Karnataka CM

The BJP central leadership on Sunday officially bowed to the nearly six months dissidence by its party legislators in Karnataka to remove D V Sadananda Gowda from chief minister's post by asking him to step down and pave the way for party's old guard Jagadish Shettar.
Though the change in leadership was imminent, party's satraps in New Delhi were hoping it would die down. But the resignations of nine ministers including CM designate Shettar a fortnight ago escalated the dissidence making the leaders to give a serious thought to finally ask Gowda to give up his 11 month old tenure as CM.

Things moved swiftly on Sunday morning with Gowda meeting BJP national president Nitin Gadkari at 9 am where he handed over his resignation. As Gowda left for Bangalore by noon, Shettar's name was announced by Gadkari setting the pace for the formation of a new BJP ministry for the third time in four years. If Shettar is lucky and has a smooth sailing, his tenure is till May 2013.
